Jose L Diaz serves on the BOMA South Puget Sound Board of Directors. He brings a wealth of knowledge for our Allied Members and Proprietary membership alike and continues to help BOMA South Puget Sound grow to a sustaining place of development and education. Jose is a 20 Year Veteran of the US NAVY Submarine Service, who retired in 1998. Jose has a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale.

Jose has been an active member in BOMA South Puget Sound for over 10 years and has been an asset in developing the growing market for our Allied Members with in the Association. Jose has received numerous awards from different associations for his work in developing educational programs and event planning.

Jose Diaz currently works at PSF Mechanical and has a history of leadership in HVAC Industry since his Navy career.

He grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, and now resides in the PNW south end with his wife, and four children.

"Demystify the Negotiation Process"

Dan will share his experiences and help attendees increase their confidence in negotiations with a consistent framework to encourage more collaborate and win-win orientated interactions. The discussion will give you tools to apply immediately and provide a simple negotiation framework which leverages the insights outlined in the acclaimed book "Getting To Yes". The brief overview will help you improve your approach to negotiations and increase your ability to diagnose a variety of negotiation styles you may encounter.

Dan Barrett

Dan Barrett spent nearly 20 years working for Sellen Construction, most recently as an Executive Vice President leading strategy, running multiple operating divisions and supporting business development. He was responsible to facilitate corporate improvements, has led project teams as Principal from pursuit through completion, and was the person most often responsible to guide internal changes or new business ventures. In 2017 Dan left Sellen and started his own consulting practice to focus on what he loves helping companies and teams clarify their strategy, improve operations, and increase profits. Today, Dan works with businesses both within the design and construction industry and beyond as an interim executive to lead new growth and change initiatives or provides targeted consulting and training to solve specific challenges.

Dan earned Bachelor degrees in Finance and Construction Management from Washington State University, a Master's Degree from Stanford University and an Executive Certificate from Harvard Business School. He has served on multiple industry, business and non-profit boards across our community, was the recipient of Puget Sound Business Journal's 2014 40 Under 40 award, and was a member of Seattle Chamber of Commerce's 2013 Leadership Tomorrow class.

In this presentation we will look at Electrochromic Glass and how it can affect occupant comfort and wellness.  We will discuss how electrochromic glass works, what the benefits are to owners and occupants and cover a few case studies.

Speaker: Tom Kelley, View Dynamic Glass

Tom Kelley is a Sales Executive for View Dynamic Glass covering the Pacific Northwest.  He has over 12 years working in the built environment with a multitude of building system types.  He recently came to View after previously working for McKinstry and Nalco.  Prior to coming into the building industry, Tom was a Submarine Officer stationed in Bangor, WA.

Program: Circadian Lighting: From Research to Practice

We are honored to have one of the premier experts in the field of Circadian Lighting as our luncheon presenter. Marty is an architect and daylighting specialist at ZGF Architects in Seattle and has worked on a variety of projects in the healthcare, commercial office and mixed use markets. His talk will introduce circadian rhythms and how it impacts our health. Then get into the aspects of designing lighting systems for circadian rhythms. 

He will also provide examples of practical applications of this evolving technology, including lighting controls and fixtures. Plus a recent case study to wrap up his talk.

Speaker: Marty Brennan, ZGF Architects

Marty Brennan is a project architect and daylighting specialist at ZGF Architects. Marty fosters a proactive, participatory environment and promotes quality design on a wide variety of projects including healthcare, corporate office, and mixed use. Marty is a graduate of the University of Washington with a Master of Architecture degree and a certificate in lighting. He was a research assistant at the Integrated Design Lab in Seattle providing daylighting simulation and energy benchmarking for design teams in the Pacific Northwest as well as contributing content to the online Daylighting Pattern Guide. His research led to a deep interest in daylighting and circadian light. As a result Marty has co-developed the Grasshopper circadian light imaging application Lark and continues to incorporate forward-thinking lighting design into his projects.

Radim Blazej, CEO of Caron Architecture, will present Tacoma's next big project: The Tacoma Town Center Mixed-Use project. The presentation will cover several highlights of the project, which has recently broken ground just west of the Seven Seas Brewing building downtown, including working with Foreign Investment in a commercial development. Highlights will also include a history of Caron Architecture, the project history and vision, along with challenges and opportunities. Discussion around these challenges will be the various market, city, foreign and federal government aspects. Followed by a current status and Q&A after.

Mark Gjurasic is the principal of Public Affairs of Washington, LLC, specializing in governmental affairs representation, fundraising and educational services.  He began his lobbying career in the 1980’s.  As a result, he has long-term relationships with many lawmakers both on the Congressional and State level.

Mark represents a significant real-estate client base which includes: 

  • Building Owners and Managers Association, (BOMA),
  • Institute for Real-Estate Management (IREM), 
  • International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC),
  • Washington Rental Owners Association (WROA), 
  • Manufactured Housing Communities of Washington (MHCW),
  • Washington Self Storage Association (WSSA) and 
  • Government Building Owners and Lessors Association (GBOLA).  

His expertise is in commercial and residential real estate, real-estate taxation, landlord and tenant act, and manufactured housing landlord and tenant act.
